There are various accommodation options for retirees to consider, when embarking on the journey into retirement village living.
Some retirees may choose independent living units which are known as ILU’s. Others, may, due to their age and health opt for and be more suited to an Assisted Living Unit. These can also be called Serviced Apartments, depending what the retirement village operator wishes to name them.
Some Villages offer little or minimal care whilst others will offer a wide range of care and have care staff on site 24 hours a day. You can also arrange your own home care package.
- Independent Living Units – ILU’s
Independent living units are the first and most common option for retirees and over 55’s. They are perfect for seniors who just want a smaller home offering little or no maintenance, more security, and community living with access to great facilities on their doorstep. Units are usually one or two bedrooms with a full kitchen and living area. Some may even have a small yard, courtyard, or balcony.
Independent living is what most people envisage when they think of retirement living and are exactly what the title says, you live independently, you cook your own meals, choose to clean your home or pay a cleaner and you be involved with the village community as much or as little as you wish.
- Assisted Living Units or Serviced Apartments
An alternative option is an assisted living unit. These units whilst still having the essence of an independent living, they involve assistance through the provision of various services to make your life comfortable and safe.
Residents will usually eat in a communal dining room or if needs be, have meals delivered to your unit. The units generally will have a kitchenette and you will provide your own breakfast and snacks.
Residents may receive assistance with cleaning, changing linen, washing clothes, personal care and maintenance of the unit. Some operators will include certain services in the monthly fee whilst other will have a “fee for service”.
You will need to discuss you specific needs and the associated costs with the village operator. Make sue you clarify and understand what is included in your monthly fees and what are the extra services you will need to pay for.
